Today we booked a couple of
high school seniors who have already had pictures done by other "photographers". I put photographers in quotation marks because these days, just about everyone thinks they can be a
professional photographer. Just because somebody has a pretty good eye and a camera with more technology than the space shuttle doesn't make them a professional photographer. Just as somebody with a really nice kitchen is not necessarily a gourmet chef. Sure they can probably make a nice meal or take a nice photograph, but every once in a while the occasion warrants a true professional.
We've noticed that these rookie photographers don't typically seek out people with weight problems or people who don't like to smile or who are generally just not comfortable in front of the camera. The professional deals with these issues everyday and is proficient at minimizing peoples flaws while enhancing their best features. Creating a portrait that will stand the
test of time is not the same as snapping some candid pictures. Skills in lighting, composition, posing, color harmony and even psychology are all things that
professional photographers spend years mastering.
